The Junior Lonestar maybe destined to make history when they battle The Gambia in the grand final of the West African Football Union (WAFU) U-20 Championship this Saturday.
Liberia is hoping to win her first major trophy when the nation takes on Gambia in the final of the WAFU U-20 Championship at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville on Saturday. Kickoff time is 6pm.
The Last time Liberia reached a major tournament final was 31 years ago when she hosted the Black Star of Ghana in the grand final of the Zone III Eight Nations tournament which was held at the SKD in February 1987.The Lone Star suffered a 2-0 defeat in that game.
It was wonder man Musa Kebbay’s strike in the 11th minute that give the Junior Lonestar a sweet victory over a determined young Malian team to break a 31-year unwanted national record. Bea Mountain’s Musa Kebbay the recorder setter and a new prolific discovered attacker who has now become a regular goal customer in the tournament slipped through the a very aggressive Milian defense and utilized a superb LISCR FC’s Edward Ledlum pass to set the SKD into a blast of goal after 12 minutes from kickoff.
It was a sight to see as former football legend and now President George Manneh Weah and his predecessor, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf joined the jubilant crowd to hail the Lonestar with their inspiring presence to the boys.
The Lonestar would have doubled their lead later, but striker Sam Jackson flipping shot hit the pole after a great deal of work done by the inspiring Barrack Young Controller attacker.
Coach Christopher Wreh men took full control of the match amidst huge applaud from the home supporters, but feeble scoring ability denied them several scoring chances.
The best chance for the Malian came in the 38th minute, but striker Lassana Diaye was denied by outstanding Liberian lad Ashley Williams.The LISCR FC third Choice came out like a blazing fire toward Diaye who was put on sight by an Ousmane Diakete’s brilliant through pass, the lad made the save to the amusement of the home supporters.
Captain of the day defensive Allen Njie ,The Midfielder Njie was awarded the SERGIO Man of the match award as a result of his exceptional display for the hosts.
Meanwhile the Local Organizing Committee of the WAFU U-20 Tournament has announced that the 3rd place match will be played on Saturday ahead of the grand finale with the matches beginning at 4pm and 6pm respectively.
