National team head coach Thomas Kojo’s has dropped Liberia’s Malta-based defender Adolphus Marshall from the squad of Lone Star’s for next match against the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 18, in Monrovia at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
It can recalled that coach Kojo recently released a 25-man provisional squad comprising of both local and foreign-based players ahead of the crucial encounter. Defender Marshall and midfielder Sekou Sheriff were the two players dropped from the coach’s previous squad. He is quoted as saying that the coach’s decision is the best and for the good of the game. “Liberia is my country whether I am called or not I always cheer my nation,” he said.
The defender recently featured for the national team during the Congo versus Liberia match in Brazzaville, Congo. Marshall was substituted in the 67th minute and replaced by LPRC left-back Aloysius Simujla, after a dismal performance. After the game, the 26-year-old defender raised concern about his playing position, stating that, as a center-defender, he was misplaced on the national team in the left-back position.
On the contrary, Kojo, during a pre-match press conference on October 15, termed the defender’s discomfort as a poor excuse, stating that the 26-year-old should learn to adapt to the position as a player whenever he’s on national duty.“Since I started playing my professional football, I have been working hard each day to play center defense to the best of my ability and through God’s grace, I left Asia for Europe, learning and achieving a lot. Playing on the national team as left back is something I was trying to improvise, but that is not my role. I respect Kojo as my coach and father and I also respect his decision,” he said.
Defender Marshall currently players for Gudja United Football Club, in Malta from the south-eastern village of Gudja, which currently plays in the Maltese First Division. After playing a key role in his team’s success during the 2017 league season, the former NPA Anchors defender was named the best player of his club Gudja United. The prestigious club award was presented to the defender on Friday, August 30 at the club’s official opening program for the 2018-19 season.
