Liberian Champions Barack Young Controller are set to participate in an inaugural West African Football Union (WAFU) inter-club tournament for champions this weekend, Liberiasportsonline.com has confirmed.
This maiden edition will have league champions from four member states competing from Friday March 31 to Sunday April 2, 2017 at the Stade Demba Diop in Dakar, Senegal.
Barack Young Controller the current champions of the Liberian League accepted an invitation to participate in the inter-club football tournament alongside champions of Ghana , Wa All Stars , Ivory Coast’s AS Tanda and US Goree, the league winners of host nation Senegal.
The ‘Go Blues Boys’ were on Friday defeated by US Gorée 5-4 in a penalty shootout that denied them the chance of reaching the final of the tournament. The Liberian champions continued with their dominance in ball position, but failed to utilize their goal scoring opportunities during international matches.
They later had an opportunity in the 3rd place playoff against Wa All Star of Ghana, but were narrowly defeated 2-1.Wa All Stars took the lead in the first half after BYC had missed several goal scoring chances through Van-Dave Harmon. BYC got the equalizer in the second half through David Tweh’s left foot strike in the roof of the net after forward Sam Jackson skillfully passed his opposing defenders to provide the assist for the young talent.
BYC missed out on the prize money of $20,000 USD at the ongoing WAFU tournament after losing their opening game in the competition. The loss thus denies them also of a place in the finals which could possibly give them the opportunity to grab the whooping cash as winners of the competition. But the Liberian Club Barrack Young Controllers also missed out on the third place game for $3,000.But will come home with a consolation price .
Coach Sannah’s boys dominated the match by controlling ball possession and came close to clinching victory after skipper Harmon drove through his opponents’ defense and connected his teammate Kertu Jebro. The four are champion clubs in the four countries and it was sponsored by FOX Sports TV Network of Los Angeles, United States
Many soccer fans locally feels this was a good learning ground for the team as they prepare for Super Sports match in Liberia .WAFU, made of Zones A&B, signed a $24million deal with Fox Sports in December last year and are celebrating their partnership with the competition dubbed the ‘WAFU Challenge Cup’.
They were all lodge in the Novotel Dakar, with the three other competing clubs. The WAFU Challenge Cup was shown live on RTS and FOX Sports Channels around the world.
