February 6 – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering scrapping the forthcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon because of fixture congestion, according to local reports.
The tournament, which exclusively features locally based players at African clubs, takes place from April 4-25 but likely adverse weather conditions is another reason for a possible cancellation. If it goes ahead African club competitions will have to be stopped and rescheduled.
No official decision has yet been taken but the group phase of both the African Champions League and African Confederation Cup would have to be squeezed into just two months, which will also have a major impact on domestic leagues.
Postponing the event would be another blow to Cameroon. Having been stripped of hosting rights for this year’s Africa’s showpiece event, the African Cup of Nations, they were instead been handed the consolation prize of the 2020 CHAN finals in place of Ethiopia.
