Five Liberian Chess Stars Qualified For Georgia Olympiad

Five Liberian Chess players have booked qualification to this year’s Georgia Olympiad. The 2018 Olympiad will mark Liberia’s first participation at Chess’s biggest world event.

The five qualified to represent Liberia at the competition after winning various challenges at the Liberia-Georgia Olympiad qualifiers.
The five to represent Liberia are Jacob Jallah, Tom Sawyer, Barcon Harmon, James Tondo and Thomas Saah.Jacob Jallah emerged from that qualifier as Liberia’s new number one Chess star, as he collected the biggest score to finish at the top of Liberia’s ranking.Entertaining Chess player, Tom Sawyer finished in rank two, while Liberia’s only FIDE Master; Barcon Harmon ended the qualifier at Rank three.

Young and enterprising chess player, James Tondo emerged as the fourth rank chess star at the qualifier, with Thomas Saah picking up rank five to book a space at the Olympiad.About 24 local chess players competed in the three days tournament staged at the new headquarters of the Liberia Chess Federation on the Old Road.

Speaking to a local daily following the competition, Liberia’s new Chess Federation President William Thompson said he is happy that his campaign promises to the Chess Stakeholders are coming to pass just four months of his leadership.

He said with the enthusiasm shown during the qualifiers; he’s of the biggest conviction that the Liberian Chess Players will make headways at the September Olympiad in Georgia, the United States.

William Thompson, however, said the Federation had a huge challenge in getting the five players to Georgia for the competition.
He said the Federation had serious financial constraints at the moment and will look up to government and good will Liberians to help in taking Liberia to the game.

The Local Chess President said “Liberia’s participation at the Georgia Olympiad will further tell the World that the country is getting better by the days and years.Two of the qualifiers have meanwhile expressed optimism of showcasing Liberia at the World Chess event in Georgia.Jacob Jallah (Rank #1) and James Tondo (Rank #3) said having the opportunities to play at an International event like the Georgia Olympiad has been a dream.

They both said winning their respective challengers in the competition was tough and lesson well learned.
