Liberia to clash with Niger to reach Semi- final of WAFU 2019

Story by Peterking Quaye –The 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations is the sixth edition of the WAFU Nations Cup, an association football tournament that is affiliated with the West African Football Union (WAFU), taking place from September 28 to October 13, 2019 in the industrial city of Thiès the capital of Thiès Region, the 3rd largest city in in Senegal.

The 16 members of WAFU are  competing in the competition in a knockout-style format with the losers of the first round playing in a plate-competition.

Liberia after the opening defeat has a chance to play in the plate-competition ,will clash with Niger . Liberia and Niger clash is the 4th Quarter final match of the tournament and will be on the 6th October,2019 . Niger was part of the 3 team that received the heaviest defeat of the tournament , home-based side Senegal were handed a 3-1 defeat by Guinea –Bissau , Ivory Coast were also humble by a 4-1 defeat by Cape Verde and Niger were defeated 3 goals to by Mali in the tournament. Liberia will have to go all out to defeat Niger looking at their tournament performance.

Liberia will have to fight back in the tournament after playing a two day match to concede a painful defeat from their neighboring nation of Sierra Leone in the tournament due to poor lightening at the stadium . The tournament opening defeat of 1-0 at the hands of Sierra Leone was a wake-up call to Robert Lartey boys who cannot afford to be booted out of the tournament.

Liberia squad is made up of the best local league players and must play well to secure a victory. A win for Liberia will a see progression to the next stage to face Guinea . But ahead of the tournament Liberia team were listed to have one of the six players to watch , in person of Mark Karlay according ESPAN Africa . The player was described as a potent firepower for Liberia at contest. Also acknowledge that Liberia can boasting of plenty players who can trouble any opposition defense.

But from all indication Lone Stars coach Robert Lartey has opted not to use Jestino Jackson, but he can call on the dual threats of Mark Yallah and Mark Karlay, both of whom scored 18 goals in the nation’s second tier last season .

In a related development , On the 3rd October  Guinea-Bissau loos 0–2 Guinea, with goals coming from Ousmane Camara on the 86’mark of regular time and also Victor Kantabadouno in the 88 minutes of the match at the Stade Lat-Dior,in the city of Thiès . It was amazing to see Liberia’s emerging prolific referee Hassan Corneh in the center .

Nigeria’s Super Eagles crashed out of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations after a disastrous penalty shoot-out saw them lose 3-2 to Cape Verde after regulation time ended 1-1 at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal, on Saturday.

The Super Eagles controlled the possession stakes in the first half but for all their dominance they struggled to create significant goal scoring chances, largely due to poor passing in the final third. Their defeat came at post-match penalties which ended 2-3 in favour of Cape Verde.

It be recalled that Ghana are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having won the past two editions in 2013 and 2017, both on home soil. Nigeria and Togo had won the previous two tournaments, in 2010 and 2011 respectively, after the first edition in 2002 was cancelled because of civil war in the host nation, Ivory Coast.
