Forward’s two-goal performance gives Steel FC first league honor in club history -After a historic match against FC Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Stadium, Bethlehem Steel FC’s Seku Conneh was voted the USL Player of the Week.
Conneh received 42 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market. The weekly honor is both Steel FC’s and first win the league’s top player of the week.Conneh’s
The 21-year-old overcame a saved penalty kick in the first half, with a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes to lift Steel FC over FC Cincinnati for the first time in club history. Conneh began his scoring in the 47th minute, receiving a long ball from Jack Elliott. Conneh timed his run on the wing to beat the defense. After a couple dribbles inside, Conneh curled in a shot at the top of the 18-yard box that found the back of the net for the opening goal.
In the 60th minute, Steel FC doubled its lead as Conneh found his final goal of the evening. A quick build up once more, Santi Moar found space and dribbled into the penalty area. With Cincinnati’s keeper closing in, the Spaniard laid it off to Conneh, who scored on the near post.
Conneh’s two-goal performance was historic at the Liberian national team forward became the first player in the club’s history to have a multi-goal match. Conneh’s brace against Cincinnati marked the first time in Conneh’s career that he had scored two goals as well.
The Liberian native has already surpassed his scoring count from last season and leads the USL with three goals in two matches. Conneh has scored five times as a member of Bethlehem Steel FC, tied for the club record with Derrick Jones and Ryan Richter.
Conneh and Steel FC return to action on Saturday, April 15 when the club travels to in-state rival Harrisburg City Islanders. Kick off from FNB Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
- Seku Conneh was tapped as captain for today’s match. The Liberian international became the club’s fifth player to wear the captain’s armband in Steel FC history.
- Conneh’s brace was the first in Steel FC history and the first of his career. Conneh now has scored three goals this season, and five for his Steel FC career.
