The Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) has condemned in the strongest possible term recent comments by National Football Team Head Coach, James Salinsa Debbah which he branded Liberian Sports Journalists as “so-called sports journalists who report only speculated stories”. This was contained in a release by the association dated June 16,2017 and signed by the General Secretary and approved by the president .SWAL describes Debbah’s assertion of Liberian Sports Journalists as reckless, unprofessional unfounded, disrespectful and unfortunate in the modern age.
Coach Debbah’s comment that “Sports Journalists only get critical with the Lone Star coach when journalists desired players are not selected to the national team for a match” is a pathological lie, completely untrue and out of order.
SWAL wishes to remind the coach that Liberian Sports Writers are for national team players whether football, basketball, volleyball, etc.Coach Debbah’s unprofessional and unfortunate comment against Sports Writers is not only a misstep, but a calculated attempt employed by the lowly rated, inconsistent and hurriedly made coach to escape from his responsibilities and put blame for his dismal performance as coach of the Lone Star to the feet of the Sporting Media, something which is absurd and unacceptable.
Again, SWAL wishes to inform hurriedly turned Coach, Debbah that the support of the Sporting Media has kept him in the position despite not being well-suited and experienced for the job, as such he needs to appreciate the sports writers rather than denigrate them.
The Coach should learn how to take responsibilities for his gloomy showing with the Lone Star and focus on how he can address himself to the situations that are threatening the demise of the National Football team of Liberia, the Lone Star. SWAL sees Debbah’s comment as a complete disrespect to all Liberian Sports Journalists who have exhibited the highest level of professionalism in supporting the growth of football and the national team over the years.
James Salinsa Debbah needs to be clear, if any member of the Sporting Press has carried out unprofessional attitudes in the discharge of his/her reportorial duties. SWAL is, meanwhile calling on Coach James Salinsa Debbah to retract his statement against members of the Liberian Sporting media, as building a sour relationship with the media will not go well for him in his hope of building a formidable National Football team. Remember, “The pen is mightier than the sword”, as such Coach Debbah, from all indication, who lacks ideas in handling the nation’s pride and joy, must rethink or be made a laughing stock as the might of the pen will fall on him.
