Wade Elected LBA President, Promises New Direction for Boxers

The Liberia Boxing Association (LBA) has a new president. He is Mr. Jonathan Wade. He was elected on a white ballot over the weekend in Monrovia.Mr. Emmanuel Sackey was elected vice president for administration, Fredrick Jackson vice president for technical affairs and Alfred Slocum secretary general.

President Wade promised members of his association and stakeholders of his leadership’s fullest support to ensure that Liberian boxers participate in all national and international competitions.

He outlined some key steps his administration will pursue in the next four years to improve the image of boxers in the country.“We will build an excellent working relationship with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC) to gain their support for the advancement of Liberian boxers as well as building their capacity,” he said.

He spoke on the need to build facilities for boxers and procuring boxing equipment. He will also encourage the organization of boxing clubs throughout the country.Wade said his administration will create awareness of the sport in communities throughout the country through the hosting of boxing bouts.“We have to keep our athletes in top form so that they will be able to perform to our expectation against their opponents nationally and internationally,” he said.

He promised to do all he can for Liberian boxers to honor international events. He will also ensure referees, coaches and judges undergo the required training to improve on the game.

Wade also promised to organize local competitions as well as an annual competition to showcase the talents of Liberian boxers.He called on interested athletes, who have not been active in boxing, to come back and support the administration in its drive to restore boxing in its rightful place in Liberian sports.
