The draw for the 2019 West African Football Union (Wafu) under-20 Nations Cup took place in Conakry, Guinea on Wednesday.The tournament will kick-off on 24 November when Senegal take on Sierra Leone at 3:30PM and Guinea welcome Mauritania at 5:30PM.
The West African Football Union is an association of the football playing nations in West Africa. It was the brainchild of the Senegal Football Federation who requested that the nations belonging to CAF’s Zone A and B meet and hold a regular competitive tournament. The union organises several competitions including the WAFU Nations Cup and in 2008 they organised an under-20 championship. This year Runner-up Liberia were drawn in Group ‘B’ along with defending champions Gambia, Mali and Guinea Bissau.
Hosts Guinea will battle Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone in Group ‘A’. Another top youth football development oriented country ,Gambia will attempt to go-pass an entertaining Malian side and Liberia will also take it’s destiny into her hands to rewrite a new youth football history for itself when they play host to Guinea Bissau on 25 November .Liberia will then be given chance in the group pitch strength with Gambia on 27 November. Liberia final match in the tournament will see the little Lonestar take on Mali on 2 December in the semi-finals.
Mainwhile the local organizing committee is yet to name the venues for the tournament, however, matches are expected to be played at the 50,000-seater Stade de Nongo and 25,000-capacity Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry. And the 5,000-seater Stade Régional Saifoullaye Diallo in Labe, which is the administrative capital of Fouta Djallon region and second largest city in Guinea, is expected to be used as training ground.
The grand-finale will be played on 8 December.
